Biography

Saudi contemporary visual artist and photographer whose practice moves between observing reality and reconstructing it, shifting between scenes encountered in everyday life and worlds constructed through the image.

Working across photography, constructed imagery, objects, sculpture, and moving image, Alattaf’s works may begin with a found moment or with a question or text that develops into constructed characters, environments, and physical elements.

His practice repeatedly engages with the relationship between people and their surroundings, transformation, memory, and transitional states within human experience, moving between documenting reality and reconstructing it without being confined to a single medium.

Alattaf began his visual practice in 2014 and specialized in photography in 2016. Since 2019, his practice has increasingly moved toward constructing images and environments through colour, costume, sculptural forms, and physical elements, later expanding into sculpture, objects, moving image, and printmaking processes.

Artist Statement

My practice often begins with observation. I look at people, objects, and everyday situations, and at the relationships that emerge between them, searching for moments in which the familiar appears slightly different from what we have come to expect.

Some of these moments are encountered as they are, and I approach them through photography. At other times, reality alone is not enough to articulate an idea, and I reconstruct it through characters, environments, objects, and staged scenes.

Questions, texts, and experiences within my practice are translated into visual and physical forms. A work may begin as an image and extend into an object, sculpture, moving image, or printmaking process, depending on what the work requires. I therefore do not approach medium as a starting point, but instead search for the form through which an idea can exist.

My work repeatedly returns to the human relationship with surrounding environments, as well as transformation, memory, existence, and states that lie between things: between the real and the constructed, the familiar and the unfamiliar, presence and absence.

For me, observation and construction are not separate processes. Sometimes I search for an image within reality; at other times, I need to construct the reality in which that image can exist.
